Madeira: City Hotels and Accommodation
In addition there are several resort areas around the island that are not too far from Madeira Airport (FNC). Funchal
The capital of Maderia, Funchal contains the island's highest concentration of accommodation and was founded at the beginning of the 15th century. Modern hotels in the city of Funchal line much of the shoreline, often close to beaches, rocky cliffs, walking trails, terraces and restaurants.
Calheta
Located on the western side of the island, Madeira's parish of Calheta is small in size and contains a minimal selection of accommodation, including small guest houses. Known for its boats and yachts, sailing and fishing are amongst the main highlights in Calheta .
Camara de Lobos
The second-biggest parish on Madeira, Camara de Lobos contains a number of noteworthy hotels and an impressive mountainous terrain. Densley populated, Camara de Lobos is home to a number of high-rise buildings and hotels, many of which are located side by side in the north-western area.
Machico
Sited on the north-eastern side of Madeira, the town of Machico is an appealing location and amongst the largest on the island. Hotels here offer good value for money and impressive views, being a popular alternative to mainstream accommodation in nearby Funchal, which is just 17 km / 11 miles away.
Santa Cruz
Many people visiting Maderia choose to stay in Santa Cruz, which can be found on the eastern side of the island, to the north-east of Funchal. Accommodation in Santa Cruz is close to a popular water park, which features fast slides and two large swimming pools.
Santana
The resort of Santana is perhaps best known for its recently opened theme park, featuring a mixture of local history, activities and entertainment. Many hotels are just a stone's throw away from this part of Madeira, with other attractions at the park including boat rides and extreme sports.
